Observations - Habits of Deer

We have tested our product, Deer Defeat, all natural deer and rabbit repellent spray, over the past few years in all seasons, so we could share with you the best way to use Deer Defeat. We live in Upstate New York, where there is no shortage of deer. Our house is very close to the woods and at times, we could count over 16 deer in our yard. We have fresh water drainage to the lowest point of the property which is at the edge of the woods. This is the place visited daily by numerous deer. They enjoy our 2 acres of landscaped property with various flowering trees, all types of flowering bushes (such as azaleas, rhododendrons, evergreens), perennial flowers (such as daylilies, tiger lilies, hostas, phlox) and annuals (including impatiens, petunias, pansies) and all kinds of salvias.

Observations - Spring and Summer

Deer and rabbits have plenty of grass and trees with succulent leaves in the woods. They spend the majority of their days

under the shady trees but just like people, deer like variety. Deer will keep away from your yard most of the day but early in the morning and late evenings, they will try to get closer to your house to taste some of the delicacies of your garden. Deer will even try naturally deer resistant plants. Once deer and rabbits discover the sweet tasting pansies, tulips, daylilies, impatiens and just about any flowers that you can’t wait to see in full bloom, they will devour them. They can’t help themselves; deer, rabbits, groundhogs and all other browsing animals just can’t resist the taste of some flowers. For best protection spray the flowers with all natural Deer Defeat, deer and rabbit repellent, as soon as you plant them. As the plants grow an additional 5” or 6”, give them a light refreshing application of Deer Defeat spray to discourage the deer from exploring. When flowers mature and the buds start to emerge, spray them with Deer Defeat repellent to keep the deer away from the buds. There is no need to saturate the plants, just a normal spray with visible drops will be sufficient to keep the deer away. As the spray dries in 15 to 20 minutes it will be odorless to humans but will keep away deer, rabbits, groundhogs and all other grazing animals that have a very sensitive sense of smell. The best time to spray the Deer Defeat repellent is to apply it when the weather is calm, usually early in the morning or late afternoons and at least 4 to 6 hours before it rains to allow to fully dry. The spray is an all natural deer and rabbit repellent product and safe for you and your pets. It protects your precious flowers for a very long period, by creating an invisible blanket. Deer Defeat repellent is rain resistant; however during the prolonged periods of steady and extremely heavy rains use your judgment. Refresh with a regular application of Deer Defeat repellent spray as needed. However I can’t stress enough, by observing the deer on a daily basis, the most important advice I can give you is to spray the perennial flowers and all your flowering bushes very early in the spring and annuals, as soon as you plant them. This will ensure your absolute satisfaction and the most beautiful flowers all season long. You will be amazed by how easy it is to keep the deer, rabbits, groundhogs and all unwanted animals away from your flower beds.

Observations During The Winter

We all know that the real test comes in the winter, when deer are desperate and in order to survive they will eat anything they come across. In upstate New York we get our share of snow, ice and below freezing temperature. To test the spray we covered some evergreen bushes with burlap and some with wire netting. The ones closest to the woods we fully sprayed the whole evergreens with Deer Defeat all natural deer and rabbit repellent. We coated the entire evergreens with a good coat of spray just before the first winter storm and left them uncovered. The location was perfect to observe the deer on a daily basis in their natural environment. These were cold months with temperatures constantly below freezing, with snow and ice blanketing the ground. In the winter it’s hard to say when deer sleep. Food is scarce and they are in constant search of their next meal. The evergreens that were protected with burlap, the deer managed to push the burlap up and gain access to branches underneath. The evergreens that were covered with wire netting, the deer managed to separate the netting, stick their head in and eat the shrubs. The evergreens that were sprayed with Deer Defeat all natural deer and rabbit repellent, were not touched by the deer. We saw plenty of deer at a distance from the sprayed evergreens at different times of day and evening, but it was like these evergreens were “invisible” to them. With constant snow on the ground we could see and follow the deer tracks with ease. Deer are very intelligent animals with great memory and they will remember where previous years they found food.

We sprayed the uncovered evergreens with Deer Defeat, deer and rabbit repellent, just before the first winter storm and then once again in the middle of the winter. We suggest you spray all the shrubs and any trees you want to protect with a good coating of repellent to get them ready for a long winter. You can use Deer Defeat, all natural deer and rabbit repellent, even if the temperature is below freezing. Deer Defeat will not damage your plants; instead, it will protect them from the harsh temperatures and strong winds during the cold winter months. Because of colder temperatures during applications, make sure you shake the spray bottle periodically so oils in the mixture don’t clog the sprayer. You should not need more than two applications of Deer Defeat repellent during the winter unless your winters are extremely long. When the deer are very hungry they will eat anything they find if it has not been sprayed. We have taken many pictures throughout the years while we were observing deer and their habits and are happy to share some with you. Enjoy our slide show. Deer Defeat all natural deer and rabbit repellent is very effective in the winter and if use it as per our suggestions you will be amazed how easy it’s to keep the deer and other grazing animals away from your precious evergreens.
